Tanzania is known for its high-quality Arabica coffee, which is famous for its lively acidity and fruity, fresh notes. A cup of Tanzanian coffee is often reminiscent of Ethiopian or Kenyan coffee, as they share the same origin. Tanzania Peaberry in particular is considered an exclusive delicacy among coffee enthusiasts.

Tanzania is the world's 18th largest producer of coffee, accounting for approximately 0.6% of global coffee production. Approximately 70% of the coffee grown in the country is washed Arabica. Almost all Tanzanian coffee comes from family-owned farms located at an altitude of 1400-1800 meters.

Om dyrkningen og forarbejdningen - The sun helped

This naturally processed coffee requires extremely careful picking – it is just on its way to the wine stage, and if you miss the right time, the coffee will be lost. It is not only us who are eager to get this coffee – our neighbors, the baboons, face the same challenge as us – to get the coffee at the right time, when the sweetness reaches its peak development point.

The sweetness of the coffee is checked after the berries have reached a deep red colour using a refractometer, which measures brix. After picking, the coffee berries are spread in extremely thin layers to dry in the African sun. Frequent turning every day ensures that the coffee reaches the optimum moisture content. The coffee is matured for a few weeks or months in the warehouse, and then carefully dehulled on the farm. Sorting and polishing in the mill complete the long process.

Om producenten, Glenmalure Farm

Glenmalure is a small specialty coffee farm near Ngila Estate Ltd in northern Tanzania. We are located on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. The farm has been growing coffee for about 100 years at an altitude of 1600 to 1650 meters above sea level. We grow traditional varieties such as Kent, Bourbons and SL28 as well as new ones such as Batian, Gesha and Pacamara. Our coffees grow under the shade of native trees and we preserve about 80 hectares of native rainforest next to the plantation, which extends up to more than 1800 meters high. This forest is connected to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti plains. Our pesticide program has been based on natural methods for more than 5 years. We use natural insecticides, such as Neem extract. We work with compost, but also with mineral fertilizers. We produce traditional fully washed coffee with a water-saving Colombian eco-pulper. We use only 1 liter of water to pulp 1 ton of coffee berries. We also produce honey-processed coffee, natural coffee, and carbonic maceration batches.
